WASHINGTON, D.C. — In a press conference that began as a trade policy announcement, President Donald Trump has proposed placing tariffs on “all Formula 1 points entering or leaving the United States.”
“It’s a total disaster,” said Trump. “We’re giving away our points—big, beautiful points—to the Europeans. Max Verstappen? Dutch. Charles Leclerc? French or Italian or something. And what do we get?”
In a statement, the FIA governing body reacted by announcing the following:
To maintain neutrality and protect the sanctity of motorsport, all races on U.S. soil will now be worth double points. This includes Miami, Austin, Las Vegas, and any street circuits we will add in the future.
Mercedes boss Toto Wolff called the decision “another example of the FIA making stuff up to distract from something else they’re doing that’s probably worse.”
In related news, Trump has also floated the idea of launching an America First Grand Prix series, where the only allowed team is Tesla—on the condition they use autopilot, “so nobody has to drive, and the crashes are 100% Made in America.”
